What is Biomass Pyrolysis?

AER Energy's unique autothermal process requires zero fossil fuel or energy input, and does not recirculate syngas or char as internal heat.

Our modular systems transform agricultural residues, forestry waste, and energy crops into reliable renewable energy systems while removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

What Are The Key Advantages of Biomass Pyrolysis?

Why choose our biomass Pyrolysis technology
Carbon-Negative

Permanently removes CO2 from the atmosphere while generating power. Our pyrolysis process creates biochar, sequestering carbon for centuries.

Modular & Scalable

Factory-built modules from 1MW to 50MW capacity. Rapid deployment and easy expansion to meet growing energy demands.

Ultra-Pure Syngas

Advanced gas conditioning delivers exceptionally clean syngas with minimal particulates and emissions well below regulatory limits.

Proven Technology

Decades of pyrolysis experience with commercial-scale installations worldwide. Mature, reliable biomass power systems.

How Does Biomass
Pyrolysis Work?
Four integrated steps transform waste biomass into ultra-clean syngas for power generation
Feedstock Preparation
Biomass materials are sized, dried, and conditioned to optimize gasification efficiency. Our systems accept diverse feedstocks from agricultural residues to forestry waste.
Pyrolysis
In our patented, high-temperature thermochemical reactors, biomass is converted into ultra-pure syngas & biochar through precise temperature and atmosphere control. This process delivers exceptionally high hydrogen yields while maintaining unmatched gas purity, enabling both industrial energy applications and advanced chemical synthesis.
Syngas Conditioning
Our multi-stage cleaning system removes particulates, tars, and unwanted compounds to produce syngas that exceeds global emission and purity standards. The advanced conditioning stage allows us to tailor the gas composition for specific applications — from high-efficiency electricity generation to hydrogen-rich output for fuel production. Integrated CO₂ capture further strengthens our climate-positive impact.
Energy Generation & Upgrading
Ultra-pure syngas from our system can;

- Generate electricity via high-efficiency engines or turbines for grid-connected power
- Be upgraded into high-value hydrogen and green methanol for use in sustainable aviation fuel, shipping, and industrial chemistry
- Enable heat recovery for maximum system efficiency

This flexibility ensures that every project can be configured for the highest economic and environmental return.

Customer Spotlight
"We installed AER’s 1 MW syngas generation module alongside their carbon-negative power system to replace diesel and cut our emissions footprint dramatically. The system converts plantation residue into clean, high-H₂ syngas — and feeds directly into a 24/7 baseload genset. It’s completely self-sustaining, fully remote-monitored, and has required almost no intervention since startup. A game-changer for our off-grid operations."

FAQ
What is a modular Pyrolysis system?
Chevron arrow down
A modular Pyrolysis system is a pre-engineered, containerized unit that converts biomass into syngas using high temperatures and controlled oxygen levels. AER's system operates autonomously, requires no fossil fuels, in units from 10,000 to 100,000+ tonnes of feedstock annually.
What makes AER's syngas system carbon-negative?
Chevron arrow down
Unlike conventional Pyrolysis, AER’s units permanently capture and sequesters carbon (co2) in the form of stable biochar. Combined with methane avoidance and fossil offset, this results in net-negative lifecycle emissions — verified under MRV frameworks.
What types of biomass or waste can be used?
Chevron arrow down
Our system handles;

- Plantation residue (e.g. bamboo, Acacia)
- Agricultural byproducts (husks, shells, prunings)
- Council green waste (shredded branches, leaves)
- Clean municipal waste streams (plastics, MSW blends)

Moisture tolerance: up to 40%
Particle size: adaptive control based on input
How is the syngas used?
Chevron arrow down
AER’s high-purity, hydrogen-rich syngas can be used in multiple applications;

- Electricity Generation via our Carbon-Negative Power Plants — powering 24/7 baseload systems with MRV-ready carbon tracking

- Green Methanol Production via our Green Methanol Synthesis Platform — enabling drop-in fuel for shipping, SAF, and industry

- Green Hydrogen gas for industrial & energy applications

Our modular syngas output is flexible, clean, and optimized for integration with downstream power or fuel systems — without fossil input.
Can the system run off-grid or in remote areas?
Chevron arrow down
Yes. Our units are fully autothermal and black-start capable, meaning they require no grid or fossil energy — even at startup. Remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance make them ideal for isolated industrial or mining sites.
Is the system eligible for carbon credits?
Chevron arrow down
Yes. We provide real-time CI scoring, emissions monitoring, and MRV compliance, making our systems eligible under carbon credit standards such as Puro.earth, Gold Standard, and others.
